The second biggest city in Brazil, but certainly, the first one in number of visitors and also the most memorable. Its outstanding beauty, and touristics spots well known (Redentor Christ and Sugar Loaf) are just few reasons why Brazilians and foreigners choose to go to Rio.

Now the big question, where to stay? With so many great options; which one to choose? It may appear a little redundant however it’s right to say: it depends! But we are here to try to help you in your decision.
First of all, we advise you to “study” the city map to have a better idea of what places you want to see. We’ve got this easy map to visualize the Geography of the city ( we haven’t translate as it’s all neighborhoods names).

As you can see, Rio de Janeiro is a mountainous city, even being a coast. In consequence using cars as transportation is not so fast, and also not so secure if you don’t know the city. If you are driving you can take the wrong way and end up in some of the slam (unless it’s your idea to go to a one). Think about public transportation. Maybe it’s the best option for you.
Still talking about public transportation, RJ has the subway. It's not too long, but it easily takes you from Flamengo/Botafogo neighborhoods to Ipanema/Copacabana (beaches you definitely will visit) and it's very easy to use. See below the subway map:

The main touristic points in Rio tend to be on a certain range. This thinking about those you MUST see, and all of you would want to.
Taking these spots and the transportation between them, the public transportation (even not being too much released) is an option. That being said, our tip is to focus in the well known neighborhoods that has good access to the points you want to visit. If we give you our opinion we would suggest Flamengo, Botafogo, Copacabana or Ipanema beaches, although maybe visiting a slang is what you want and may enjoy (there are touristic places to stay in most of them – hostels for example), or still stay on Barra da Tijuca (which is far from the top spots) enjoying the same way.
As we always say, plan everything you want to do, know what you will find in those places, including infra structure, that for sure you won’t have bad experiences in your vacation. Planning lead us to avoid risk and un-wanted surprises.
